What Actually Separates a Real Crypto Token From a Zero

Investor Mike Dudas, whose fund turned a $20 million position into roughly 100 times its original value, argues the crypto market has split cleanly into two distinct categories this year — and that most investors are still analysing it as if it were one homogeneous asset class. The dividing line, in his framework, is simple: does a token capture real cash flow from the business built on top of it, or is the token effectively an afterthought bolted onto a business that would function the same without it.

His clearest example of a mispriced case on the “real cash flow” side of that line is a protocol generating more than $800,000 a day in revenue, with a substantial share funneled directly into token buybacks — yet still trading well below its previous highs. The gap, in his assessment, isn’t about the underlying business weakening; it’s that the market distrusts how the project’s founders communicate, creating a persistent discount that has nothing to do with the mechanics of the token itself.

On the other side of the divide sits Ethereum, which Dudas argues faces a harder structural problem: enormous genuine activity happens on infrastructure built on top of it, but very little of that activity’s economic value flows back to the underlying token in a way investors can straightforwardly price. Strong ecosystem growth and strong token performance, in other words, have become two separate questions rather than one.

The framework travels well beyond crypto. Cash flow discipline and clear, credible communication from the people running a business tend to matter more over time than a compelling growth narrative on its own — a principle that applies just as directly to traditional equities as it does to digital tokens, even if the specific mechanics look very different.
