Robinhood’s New Crypto Chain Isn’t Built for Crypto Users
- August 2nd, 2026

Every early headline about Robinhood’s new blockchain framed it as a crypto product competing for crypto-native users. According to the executive running Robinhood’s crypto business, that framing missed the actual target entirely: the roughly 28 million already-funded Robinhood accounts, most of whose holders have never touched a crypto wallet and, by design, may never consciously realise they’ve started using one.
The conventional playbook for launching a new blockchain has been consistent for years: build developer tools and applications first, then spend heavily to convince users those applications are worth downloading a new app and setting up a new wallet for. Every major chain — Ethereum, Solana, Coinbase’s Base — has followed some version of that sequence, competing for a share of the same finite pool of people who already hold crypto somewhere. Robinhood inverted the order entirely: distribution first, infrastructure second, built underneath a company with tens of millions of funded accounts that already trust the app with retirement savings and everyday spending.
The early numbers are large enough to suggest the approach is working as intended: more than 115 million transactions and upward of $500 million locked within the first three weeks after launch — volume that would typically require months of incentive programs for a standalone chain launch starting from zero.
The clearest expression of the strategy is Robinhood’s tokenized equities product, now covering more than ninety individual stocks trading nearly continuously across well over a hundred countries, including markets where a domestic broker might still charge a flat fee per trade. It isn’t marketed or positioned as a crypto product at all — it’s presented as a cheaper, more convenient version of something those users already understand, with the underlying blockchain infrastructure deliberately kept invisible. If the approach continues to scale, it’s a genuine template other large consumer platforms with big existing user bases may look to copy, rather than a crypto-specific story that stays contained to crypto-native companies.
