SpaceX Said It Would Build Its Own Turbine Blades. The Selloff Missed What That Actually Signals.

Howmet Aerospace sold off sharply after SpaceX announced it will cast turbine blades and vanes in-house for industrial gas turbines. The reflex is easy to follow: a large buyer just said it intends to stop being a buyer. But the analysts who cover the stock have almost uniformly declined to follow the share price down. Bernstein’s Douglas Harned reiterated an Outperform rating with a $328 price target, against a share price around $254.50 — implying roughly 29% upside from where the selloff left it.

Harned’s argument rests on market share rather than sentiment. Howmet controls more than half the market for industrial gas turbine blade castings, and holds long-term agreements with every major turbine producer. Its first new capacity buildouts came online in the second quarter, with at least six more expansions queued behind them. Read that way, SpaceX’s decision isn’t a verdict on Howmet — it’s a measure of how tight the castings market has become. Companies don’t generally build their own supply of a component they can simply order.

The rest of the Street has landed in the same place. Citigroup opened a 30-day catalyst watch on the assumption the selloff proves short-lived, and 20 of the 24 analysts covering Howmet rate it a Buy or Strong Buy. The shares are down over the past month but still comfortably ahead of the S&P 500 both this year and over the past twelve. Worth keeping in mind, though: that same consensus was bullish before the announcement, so it isn’t independent confirmation. And the logic cuts both ways — if scarcity is what pushed one large customer to build its own castings, scarcity is also what would push the next one.

Which makes the thing to watch fairly specific. Not Howmet’s next quarter, but whether any of the major turbine producers follow SpaceX’s lead, and whether those six queued capacity expansions arrive into a market that is still short of castings or one that has quietly started making its own.
